Redesign of Matthäikirchhof, Leipzig

2024

The cityscape of Leipzig city centre is shaped by a rich history, which is to be continued by the redesign of Matthäiplatz. The promenade ring that surrounds the city centre, with its majestic, listed trees, is the precious green mantle in both ecological and historical terms. The planning area marks a fresh and forward-looking start without neglecting the past. The green connection to the historical staircase of Matthäiplatz is accompanied by rich planting areas, green backdrops and various seating areas, offering an ecological and social enhancement.

The area can be roughly divided into three sections. The construction of the Round Corners marks the creation of a new archive body. The exposed fragments of the former castle cemetery can also be found and experienced here. The historical outer walls of the former Matthäikirche can be seen as an archaeological window through glass panes in the ground. The central square is generously designed with direct reference to the historical monument with an attractive frame of large trees. It serves as a prelude to the Garden of Remembrance in the inner courtyard of the building with space to linger, reflect and pause.

The second section is intended to be a centre for democracy. The block, which has been closed up to now, is opened towards the city and through various squares with a human scale to the place of confrontation with history. The spatial effect is reminiscent of the original Stasi castle with clear enclosed interior and exterior areas. However, the openness and generous passageways give this place a new meaning for freedom and civil rights, creating a forum for open discourse.

The dirt area is linked to the historical course of the grounds and continued the standard of the classicist building on Richard-Wagner-Platz. The residential courtyard will be transformed into a recreation area for young and old with various offers of games and recreation opportunities. Recreation zones with children's playgrounds, calisthenics jetties, climbing and sports zones offer active opportunities. Picnic facilities and generous seating also allow you to linger and relax. It creates a green space in the middle of the city, cooler even in summer, which is accessible to everyone.

The whole concept is imbued with a green character. The existing trees remain largely preserved and are supplemented by native plants and Pollinator meadows. This creates new valuable food and habitats for native animals. The planting of wildflowers is particularly beneficial to insects and their populations. This character also extends to the roofs and roof terraces, which are enriched by a diverse design with perennials and flowering beds. It creates an environment that promotes the environment and increases biodiversity. It creates a green connection and a place of encounter with history in a safe environment.
